Stripping is the process of removing the dead hair from wired haired breeds and leaving a healthy undercoat. Stripping the coat involves plucking or pulling out the dead hair to allow new hair to come through. When stripping it should only be done on wire hair as this is not attached to the skin the same way as non wired haired coats. Wired haired coats can be clipped but it usually changes the texture making the coat softer, thicker and sometimes a different colour.

Stripping combs are a useful aid when hand stripping as it helps to grip the coat to pull it out more cleanly and effectively. If the blade is too sharp or if it is not used correctly the blade can cut the hair rather than help to grip it so care must be taken when using.
