BITCHES IN SEASON
The term "Season" is often used for the time when a bitch is fertile and can become pregnant if she is mated by a male dog. It can also be commonly referred to us "in heat".
Most bitches have their first season at around 6 or 8 months old and then usually occur twice yearly after that unless you consider neutering which Just Dogs generally recommends . There are various symptoms to spot the signs of your bitch coming into heat. Her vulva will swell and there may be a mucus discharge. After a couple of days the discharge will change to blood. The amount of blood discharged will depend on the bitch. Just like human females, bitches can have mood changes when in season and can be more or less affectionate as a result. The full cycle lasts approximately 3 weeks.
We always recommend that when your bitch is in season that you keep her on a lead whilst out on walks. You will find that your bitch is likely to attract lots of attention from male suiters, some more persistent than others. If you regularly walk with a group of dogs (especially if they are unneutered) it would be easier and fairer on the dogs to walk separately to them for the period of the season if you can. Some bitches in season are not so interested in the male attention but often they can be just as keen as the boys and this is another reason to keep her on lead through the season.
There are sprays and tablets available than can help to neutralise the odours dispelled from a season. Whilst these can make things a bit easier you shouldn't expect them to stop all the unwanted attention. Some dogs are more persistent than others!
